When Life Doesn’t Go As Planned

A long time ago, I watched a Japanese TV drama called “Long Vacation.” It’s about an ambitious musician and a struggling model who are drawn to each other, trying their best to face life’s daily struggles. Up to this day, this series is still up there in the list of my favorite TV shows. Not only because it has a lovely storyline and excellent performance by the actors, but it has also taught me a very important life lesson.

We, humans, are a truly unique race. Out of all the living things on the planet, we are the only ones to have intelligence, creativity, the ability to dream, the desire to take action and to learn. This is such a beautiful thing if you think about it. And this is what enabled us to do so much and come so far in our evolutionary journey. I mean, we have managed to colonize the entire planet and have established an entire civilization!

The bottom line is that we are dreamers. Not only that, we are believers and doers. Naturally, this applies to the individual person too. Everyone has dreams of their own. This is what makes us all unique. We all have our own aspirations, hopes, goals, plans, and a vision for what life should be like. We also work tirelessly and give it our all in the hopes that one day, we will manifest what we want.

Again, this is such a beautiful thing. Some people may want to travel the world, and some may want to build a loving family. Some may want to build a billion-dollar company, and some may want to inspire people with their art. Everyone has a story and a plan for their life. And frankly, this is what makes us humans. It is what differentiates us from every other species on the planet. It is what makes us unique as a race.

When Life Doesn’t Go As Planned

It is great to have dreams and goals, but we also can’t ignore the fundamental nature of life. It is like a rollercoaster ride, and it takes you to highs that you couldn’t have imagined and, also, to the lows that you had never thought possible. And while everything is fine and dandy when you are at the top of the ride, you feel hopeless and miserable during the lows. It’s just how life goes.

Oftentimes, life doesn’t go as planned. Think about all the dreams and plans you have had your whole life. Now, think about how many of them actually came to fruition. For most people, it is a small percentage. Of course, this is not always the case. Sometimes things are going so smoothly that you feel like there is a divine power constantly making things easier and better for you.

However, there are times when things just won’t go your way, no matter how hard you try. This is the real source of agony and misery for most people. It is in our nature to want things to happen our way. And when that doesn’t happen, we react impulsively. In times like these, it can be quite hard to keep going forward. It can be easy to lose hope and give up on your dreams. But ask yourself, is it a dream worth chasing?

If you genuinely don’t want to throw the dream onto the pile of another incomplete dream, then what should you do? Do you keep pushing yourself forward to achieve this dream? Well, sometimes, it is much better to park that dream aside and take a pause. And it is okay to do it. It doesn’t mean you’re giving up on your dream; you’re just giving yourself the permission to recharge.

Take A Breather

Every living thing needs rest to get recharged. No one can keep going endlessly. That’s why nature invented sleep. When you are tired of things not working out for you, just stop trying to make them work and step aside to take a breather. What does this mean? Well, it means to unplug from your plans for a while and think as though you are just taking a long vacation from your dream. Do you worry about your plans or work when you are on vacation? No, right? You just have to replicate this in a conscious manner.

So, why do this? For one, you will drive yourself to insanity if you keep doing something even though it is not working out. It can be your source of perpetual stress, and that isn’t good for your mental or physical health. As a human, you are prone to be burned out. This might force you to quit your dreams altogether. And the recovery from that can be quite long. So, it only makes sense to just take a pause for a while and revisit your plans later.

The second reason is that when you take a break and return to something after a while, you approach it with fresh energy. Who knows, maybe you will discover a new way to look at it, and that might make all the difference! There are so many examples in history to prove that this is an effective method. Do the same for your plans and it might just work!

Some Things Just Take Time

At the end of the day, you just have to factor in everything when you are crafting your plans. From the very beginning, you need to be mindful of the fact that things can take time to happen. This will help you manage your expectations, and you won’t feel so disappointed when your dreams take longer to manifest. Often, it is our expectations that make us feel worse than we would otherwise feel.

You also need to be mindful of the fact that things can happen in a different way than you had planned, and obstacles may crop up unannounced along the way. Again, this is just how life is, and you should prepare accordingly. Make plans for every eventuality you can imagine, and you can make the journey a little bit easier. Of course, there will still be circumstances you just can’t prepare for, and that is fine. There will be rough patches along the way where nothing will work in your favor. This is okay too. If you don’t give up, you will eventually find a way. Just make sure to take a breather when the situation demands it. Be part of the solution and not the problem. If you are able to do that, nothing can stop you to achieve that dream.

While I was reading your blog I remember all my struggles before and even up to now. I experience a lot of failure in my life, may I just share that I failed my board exam not once, not twice but 6 times. Before I kept on asking God why can’t pass that freaking board exam? I did my best reviewing and all but still no luck. But then I realized that maybe the reason why I keep on failing that board exam is that I know deep inside me that I didn’t want that and I just want to pass that board exam for my parents and not for myself. Life indeed doesn’t go the way we wanted it to be. There’s a part of me that wanted to pursue anything related to arts but I can’t at the moment and I have to set that aside for now but that doesn’t mean I will not pursue it, I just need to earn enough for now and help my parents financially. This is an awesome blog it makes you think and realized a lot of things. Keep it inspiring people.

I definitely believe in the power of rest and the need for time to recharge and recoup. We weren’t meant to keep going. If we don’t take the rest, our bodies will often break down and force us to do so.

This is so true. Thank you for the reminder.. Life is a journey and doesn’t always go as planned. At times you have to just roll with whatever it is you are given. In most cases you are being redirected from one thing and put on the path of another. That path may not be the one that you wanted or intended but in the end, it may be just what you needed. Sometimes you have to take a step back, recharge and reevaluate. When you are ready, continue to chase your dreams.

It’s really been a trying year, I experienced my biggest life bumps and I’m so grateful for the energy to keep on going on each day. I’m also grateful for the little victories regardless.

At every moment of our lives we have wonderful experiences that teach us something. One of these wisdoms teaches us that we will never discover anything new if we do not act differently and do not escape from routine, or rather, do not leave our comfort zone. Life tests us in a very honest way, putting us in different situations that resemble a fragile crystal.
